Coronavirus fitness warning issued as people ignore official advice to not exercise in other neighborhoods

Social distancing is a measure used to help stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, and we can each do our part by exercising within our own neighborhood and not mixing with family and friends who live in separate households. Not everyone is taking the stay-at-home order seriously though, leading Dr Scott Morrow, a health officer in San Mateo County, to issue a warning earlier this week urging people to not travel outside of their own neighborhood for exercise or socializing. 

“As I write this, I am both immensely grateful and exceedingly disappointed. We are in a grave crisis. I believe the virus is growing at an exponential rate in our county,” Dr Morrow wrote in his San Mateo County Health statement . “Unless everyone does their part and follows the Governor’s Safer at Home order, we will be facing an Italy-type catastrophe very soon. These orders are not recommendations, they are rules to be followed.

“For families in different households, do not mix your households at this time,” he continued. “As for outdoor exercise, people certainly need to get out, but do this in your own immediate neighborhoods. Do not drive except to provide or obtain an essential service. Do not go into other neighborhoods for recreation. This increases the risk of virus spread”.

According to stats released by John Hopkins University , the United States now has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world, with more than 82,000 cases of infection, surpassing China and Italy. At least 246 new deaths were reported on Thursday 26 March. 

In figures released by the US Department of Labor, the number of Americans filing for unemployment has also surged as the economy continues to suffer under the coronavirus pandemic, with over 3.3 million people registering to claim jobless benefits.

Despite the growing numbers of COVID-19 cases, some people continue to ignore the CDC’s advice to stay at home and only exercise in their local neighborhood. “If you decide you want to do your own thing and follow your own rules, you disrespect us all,” wrote Dr Morrow. “You spit in our face, and you will contribute to the death toll that will follow. For those of you who say: ‘nobody tells me what to do,’ now is a time to make an exception”.

Not everyone is ignoring the advice though, and plenty of Americans have taken it a step further by hosting virtual get-togethers as a way to stay connected with friends and loved ones, and by setting up home gyms to stay fit.
