Playing video games is officially good for you… according to the World Health Organisation

Gamers, rejoice. A new campaign from 18 gaming industry-leaders is promoting World Health Organization advice to stay indoors and slow the spread of coronavirus, with some even incorporating official advice into gameplay.

Sitting indoors and playing the best video game consoles for prolonged periods of time has long been discouraged by healthcare professionals, but in the bizarre times we are currently living in, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, is actively encouraging people to stay indoors and play video games to ‘beat the coronavirus’.

In a statement , the WHO described #PlayApartTogether as ‘an initiative to inform and encourage users to follow the WHO’s important health guidelines – including physical distancing, hand hygiene and other powerful preventive actions to slow the spread of COVID-19.’

It’s of paramount importance that people stay inside and practice social distancing, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of social interaction. With the internet making us more interconnected than ever before, software such as Netflix Party , which lets you stream from one of the best movie and TV streaming sites  with friends, is enabling people to overcome physical barriers to beat loneliness. Video gaming is another excellent way to bring people together, and can prove an excellent distraction from the troubling times we live in.

Healthcare officials have recently warned that not enough people are following exercise guidelines, but fitness industry experts such as Fitbit are also launching free subscriptions and sharing free at-home workouts to help people stay fit and healthy without leaving home.
